Mid-Level Software Engineer
Schoolhouse.world — free peer-to-peer learning platform founded by Sal Khan · nonprofit · ~15 employees
About the role
Schoolhouse.world is a peer-to-peer learning platform founded by Sal Khan, the creator of Khan Academy, that gives anyone free, high-quality online tutoring and human connection. It has reached more than 200,000 learners in 180+ countries and focuses on durable skills such as communication, empathy, leadership and critical thinking. It runs as an independent nonprofit, funded by donors, grants, foundations and partners such as College Board.
You'll join a five-person engineering team and own full-stack features that reach learners worldwide, working in small pods with engineers, designers and program leads. They want product-minded engineers who wear multiple hats, work directly with non-technical stakeholders and turn ambiguous user problems into elegant solutions.
Remote across the US. Engineers share an on-call rotation of about one week in every five to seven.
What you will own
- Own full-stack features end to end: understand user problems with stakeholders, scope the work, write tech specs, build and iterate on feedback
- Work in small pods with engineers, designers and program leads to stand up new program pilots and learning experiences
- Contribute product ideas and make technical trade-off decisions with support from senior teammates
- Write clean, maintainable code across the stack (TypeScript, React, Next.js, Node.js, Postgres) and take part in code reviews
- Join the on-call rotation and help streamline platform operations and safety tooling
